Signet Classic Student Scholarship Essay Contest

            Attn: Academic Marketing Department

            375 Hudson Street

            New York, NY 10014

            (212) 366-2373

            E-mail: online@penguinputnam.com

            Web: http://us.penguingroup.com/static/html/services-academic/essayhome.html

Purpose: To recognize and reward the best essays written by high school students on topics that relate to one of the books in the Signet Classic series (published by Penguin Putnam, Inc.).

2006-2007 Topic: Students enter by writing an essay on one of three topics posed for this year’s competition book, Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. The rules and conditions of the contest are outlined below:

Topics

Select one of the following three topics:

  1. In the "Introduction" to the Signet Classics editon of Gulliver's Travels, Leo Damrosch writes: "Swift's critique of the weakness of human nature is as piercing today as it ever was, and the term "Swiftian" has come to mean a special kind of biting ironic wit. At many points Gulliver is (as his name implies) a gullible vehicle of the satire, a mere mouthpiece for the author's views." Cite examples in at least three of the voyages to support these statements.
  2. What does Gulliver tell the reader about the roles and behavior of women in each society that he visits? Do you believe these descriptions show Swift to be a misogynist (a hater of women)? Why or why not? Support your answer with references to details in at least three of the four books.
  3. In Book II the King of Brobdingnab calls humans "the most pernicious race of little vermin that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the earth." However, Gulliver meets all kinds of people in his travels. Based on his description of humans (and human-like figures) throughout the novel, do you believe the King's opinion to be justified? Why or why not? Support your answer with references to details in at least three of the four books.

Eligibility: This competition is open to high school juniors and seniors and to home-schooled students between 16 and 18 years of age. Applicants must submit essays, from 2 to 3 pages in length, on a topic that changes annually but relates to the books published in the Signet Classic series. Essays by high school students must be submitted by an English teacher. Essays by home-schooled students must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian. Submissions are judged on style, content, grammar, and originality. Judges look for clear, concise writing that is articulate, logically organized, and well supported.

Financial Data: The grand-prize winners receive a $1,000 scholarship and a Signet Classic library for their school (valued at $1,700).

Duration: The competition is held annually.

Number Awarded: 5 grand-prize winners each year.

Deadline: April of each year (April 16, 2007)

2006 Scholarship Questions and Guidelines:

Google, Inc. is one of the most innovative companies on the internet. Founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the company is a pioneer in search. Prior to Google, the search function was a secondary concern for many portals. Google, Inc. is now on a collision course with one of the most financially successful companies in the world, Microsoft Corporation.

Both Microsoft and Google have crossed over into the other's realm of expertise. According to Business2.0, Microsoft has spent $100 million on perfecting MSN search. The new Microsoft search engine can be found at www.live.com. Google, Inc. has made several key acquisitions, including the purchase of www.writely.com, a web-based word processor. This purchase is a direct attack on Microsoft's most profitable business, The Microsoft Office software suite.

Please address all of the following questions:

  1. How do you see this battle playing out?
  2. How many years will this rivalry last, and who will win?
  3. Are there any other legitimate competitors to Microsoft and Google?
  4. Is Google, Inc. following its mission statement to: “organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful”?
  5. Will Microsoft be as successful against Google, Inc. as it was against the web browser pioneer Netscape?

You must write a minimum of 1,000 words; there is no maximum word count. All five topics must be covered in your essay. We will focus on grammar and the clear presentation of ideas. Include a Works Cited page with a minimum of three sources. The essay must follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) system for documenting sources, which is set forth in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th edition. Submit your essay using the online form.

Agriculture

The United Agribusiness League & United Agricultural Benefit Trust Scholarship Program

Since its inception in 1989, United Agribusiness League and United Agricultural Benefit Trust have combined to award more than $500,000 in scholarship monies to students studying agriculture and related fields of study. The money we've invested in the ag leaders of tomorrow has already paid dividends. Upon graduation, UAL scholarship winners have taken their place in management, government, market development, international sales and field supervisory capacities with agribusiness firms and in their own family businesses. Along with UAL's assistance, some have gone on to advanced graduate studies in agriculture.

In 2007 UAL has available through the League and its sponsored health care benefit trust, United Agricultural Benefit Trust (UABT), over $50,000 in scholarship grants to help fund the education of students who will pursue careers in agriculture. Any ag student presently enrolled, or who will be enrolled anytime during the 2007/2008 scholastic year in studies related to the agricultural industry should consider applying for a UAL/UABT scholarship. Only students presently residing in the United States, Canada and Mexico are eligible for the UAL/UABT scholarship program.

The Requirements for applying for a UAL or UABT Scholarship:

The rules for both programs are the same, with one key eligibility difference. Only an employee, spouse or child participating in the UABT health care plan is eligible to receive a scholarship from the League's Benefit Trust. No affiliation with UAL is required to win a League scholarship. Here are the requisite elements that must all be met in order to have a scholarship application considered.

  • Be sure all items specified in the application checklist are included in your submission. Incomplete or incorrectly completed applications will not be considered.
  • An essay is required. It must be only two pages in length, typewritten and double-spaced. A one page bibliography must accompany your essay. THE TOPIC FOR THE 2007 ESSAY CAN BE FOUND IN THE SCHOLARSHIP SUBMISSION SECTION.
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA is required to be eligible for a scholarship.
  • Three letters of recommendation are required - one from a teacher, one from an employer and one from a volunteer organization with which you have been associated.
  • A one-page typed resume of any educational, work, community or extra curricular activities that you feel you would like the scholarship committe to know about.
  • Completed applications must be postmarked to United Agribusiness League offices no later than March 30, 2007.

UAL's Scholarship Search Service

In addition to our own educational grants for agricultural students, UAL provides a valuable scholarship search program for anyone seeking funds for college, regardless of their course major.

The UAL Scholarship Search Program utilizes a database of over 9,000 sources, having a cumulative total of more than $2.8 billion in educational funds to qualified students. Through our Scholarship Search Program, UAL can provide members, their employees and families with a myriad of potential sources for financial aid.

Each student using the search service has their qualifications and educational criteria matched with the potential sources of scholarships and other financial assistance available from the organizations, institutions and agencies listed in the database. To take advantage of this special service, students simply fill out a UAL information form designed to help them find the maximum number of suitable matches in the scholarship search engine. Generally, the search results in the student receiving a comprehensive list of potential funding sources.

There is no charge for this service to all 2007 scholarship applicants, as well as to all employees of UAL member firms and their children. Contact UAL Member Services at (800) 223-4590 to obtain a Student Information Form, or fax your request to (949) 975-1573. You can also send us E-mail at: scholarship@ual.org.

IFDA Marketing Internship Grant

Purpose: The IFDA Educational Foundation has established the IFDA Marketing Internship Grant to support interns in the industry’s publishing, public relations, and marketing areas.  This grant addresses a large and important segment of the industry and IFDA membership, one that provides much of the muscle in IFDA.  There is little support available for those desiring to enter this field. Jeanne Byington of the New York chapter conceived the idea of this grant; funding began at the IFDA Conference auction in 2003.

Eligibility: an individual who is pursuing the marketing aspect of the design/home furnishings industry, such as a). currently enrolled full-time college student, b). a professional changing career fields or reentering the job market.

Applicants need to have found or already be engaged in an internship (unpaid or modest stipend and/or other minor perks with a value of less than $500 total) position (for at least 120 hours) directly involved in the marketing or public relations in the design/home furnishings industry. This may be with a public relations, marketing, or publishing firm, or with an interior design/home furnishings industry company, working directly in one of these areas. IFDA EF does not provide internships or internship lead information. That is the sole responsibility of the applicant.

Award amount: $1,500

Application requirements:

  • Completed application form
  • Signed letter from internship supervisor on official letterhead verifying internship position acceptance
  • Statement of financial need/budget to support internship (1 page)
  • Timeline (approximate) for internship (1 page)
  • Essay (500 words) that includes the following:
    • Connection between academic work and/or career goals, and internship
    • Goals and strategies for realizing these goals with internship
    • Responsibilities in internship, and impact on company or organization

Upon completion of the internship (within 60 days), a one-page follow up report is due to the IFDA EF Director of Grants.
